The Loccum Statement

This Statement has been drawn up on the initiative of some of the participants at the workshop "Stability and Peace in the Caucasus: The Case of Nagorno-Karabakh ", which took place in the Evangeliche Akademie Loccum on May 2 to May 4, 2001.

We, the undersigned,

encourage the stakeholders in the conflict and peace process to be responsible in their approach towards attempts to reach a negotiated settlement, recognising that this will require mutual compromises;

encourage representatives of the respective civil and political societies, such as nongovernmental organisations, political parties, parliamentarians, religiuos leaders, business figures, journalists ant the military to engage more actively in mutual contacts in order to foster an atmosphere in which the peace process and sustainable development can be promoted in their respective societies;
encourage those responsible for taking political decisions to recognise the efforts of civil societies and the opportunities of people's diplomacy in their search for durable peace. Loccum, May 4, 2001
